Apostle Paul's Areopagus address

Apostle Paul in Athens by Raphael (1483-1520)

Apostle Paul's arguments presented at Athens--also known as his Areopagus address--did not find humanistic common ground with the pagans; common ground already existed: man is made in the "image of God." Apostle Paul was disputing with the Jews and with devout persons (worshipers before idols) in the marketplace. There was no intellectual bridge being built--Apostle Paul insulted their belief system in Acts 17:22-23. Paul tells them they are "in everything too superstitious." This Greek adjective "deisidaimonesterous" in verse 22 of the passage was used by the Greeks to show contempt. (See the article entitled Paul's Purpose At Athens and The Problem Of "Common Ground" by Dr. R. K. McGregor Wright, ThM, PhD below.)

Apostle Paul was not an "Evanjellyfish". The common ground that Apostle Paul had with people was via Creation, Fall, and Redemption, not humanistic common grounds such as the misnomer that Apostle Paul used pagan philosophy on Mars Hill as common ground between him and the unbelievers. (See article about Mars Hill & Video interview on Natural Law by clicking link entitled: Natural Law: Video Interview with Dr. Bob Morey in Las Vegas, NV (2018) and article by Dr. Wright titled Paul's Purpose at Athens & the Problem of "Common Ground" & Paul's Purpose at Athens and The Problem with Common Ground by Dr. R.K. McGregor Wright--PDF & Was Jesus Seeker Sensitive Like Rick Warren Or The Emergent Church? & The Cost of Discernment (HTML).)

(It should be noted that the Old Testament Saints (Abraham, Moses, King David, Samson, etc.) were saved the same way as in the New Testament--that is, by believing in the preincarnate Christ and being justified through faith in Yeshua (Christ)--see FAQ 8 entitled Is Old Testament Salvation the same as New Testament Salvation?)

The Apostles turned the World upside down unlike many of the Misguided and Coward American Evangelical Christians, who think preaching the Gospel is not Loving. The Biblical definition of Love,

Love rejoices in truth according to the Apostle and the word “truth” defined biblically is used in its ethical sense of “righteousness according to God’s law.”  It means “Right or True living” (1 John 1:6; 3 John 3, 4).

It is actually Unloving and disobedience to Christ for not standing up for the Truth (such as marriage?)

Apostle Paul beheaded.Apostle Paul arrested.

The Beheading of Apostle Paul by Enrique Simonet, 1887 & Apostle Paul arrested, 1900s

The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten. After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. (Acts 16:16-24).

The Apostles had the reputation that they "were the men who turned the world upside down" (Acts 17:6). Wherever early Christians went, riots and demonstrations were soon to follow. You have misguided and ignorant so-called Christians that preach "Peace at any Price," "Don't make waves". Christians, especially students, are afraid to stand up for Christ because they will not be popular--Christ pronounces a curse on anyone who lives for popularity (Luke 6:26); this is typical of the seeker-friendly churches that are disobeying the Lord (Was Jesus Seeker Sensitive Like Rick Warren Or The Emergent Church?). What does the Lord say in Matthew 5:10 (ISV)?

How blessed are you whenever people insult you, persecute you, and say all sorts of evil things against you falsely because of me! Rejoice and be extremely glad, because your reward in heaven is great! For that's how they persecuted the prophets who came before you.

You are Either a rebel for Christ or a rebel against Christ--there is no neutrality with Christ

Christians have the responsibility according to Scripture to apply the Lordship of Christ to all of life (2 Cor.10:5). There is no neutrality with Christ. You are either a rebel for Christ or a rebel against Christ (Matthew 12:30). Christians and students should be at the forefront of issues or fights (this includes politics) for truth, justice, morals and beauty--yes, we are under the authority from God to go into the world and take dominion (Luke 14:23) and we should be against wickedness such as abortion, homosexuality, oppressing the wage earner (so-called Free Trade agreements), religious freedom being taken away by so-called "hate crime bills", illegal spying, open borders, anti-gun laws, etc. (See Personal Finance/Economics Issues, Politics/Voting, Worldview & 2nd Amendment Tabs)Witnessing in Princeton, NJ

Evangelism is commanded for all believers (Matt.28:18-20; Acts 1:8; 8:1-4; 1 Thess. 1:7-10), which includes witnessing everywhere (marketplace, work, school, etc.--see the Book of Acts). Yes, the church members should be leading sinners to Christ and then disciple them in the things of God (Matt. 28-19-20). See articles entitled Evangelism -The Lifeblood of the Church & The Myth of Neutrality & Evangelising Christians, especially in the United States. (Bible Tracts should be carried by all Christians--shame on you if you do not carry any tracts.) Also, parents are putting their children before God and this is why their children will not take a stand for God on such issues as homosexuality or witness to their classmates--see YouTube by a black pastor in Harlem, NYC entitled Homosexuality: A Family Affair--parents putting their children before God (08/26/13).

Note: Not everyone is an Apostle (examples of modern day apostles with a small "a" and prophets are: Martin Luther(16th century--Calvin called Luther an apostle), Francis Schaeffer (20th century apostle and prophet), etc. 6 of the original Apostles (James, John, Jude, Matthhew, Paul & Peter (with the exception of Mark and Luke who were also men of God) were the only ones authorized and inspired by the Holy Spirit (complete control) to write the New Testament Bible. (In the 1st century the canon was finished and closed, nothing is to be added or deleted.) Examples of Evangelists and Elders are Dr. Martin Lloyed-Wright, Charles Spurgeon (Evangelists); Pastor/Elder (1 Tim. 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9 and 1 Pet. 5:1-4.), Teacher, Deacon, etc.; however, all Christians are called to evangelize (Matt. 28:19; Acts 8:4), but not all Christians are called to the "office of evangelist" (Eph. 4:11).  Philip is called an "evangelist" in Acts 21:8. Timothy is told to do the work of an "evangelist" (2 Tim. 4:5).

Note: If you cannot afford the organic candy, then Hershey's Milk Chocolate Candy Bars is a better alternative (sugar, milk, chocolate, cocoa butter, milk fat, lecithin, PGPR, natural flavor); a lot of your store candy has horrible and harmful incredients (see article above). PGPR is not good. Try to get organic and contact Hershey and tell them to remove PGPR and lecithin.

History of Evangelism

Cotton MatherJonathan EdwardsCharles Spurgeon

Christ/Yeshua, the Apostles, the Reformers such as Luther and Calvin and famous evangelists/preachers such as Cotton Mather (02/12/1663 - 02/13/1728), Jonathan Edwards (10/05/1703 - 03/22/1758), Charles H. Spurgeon (06/19/1834 - 01/31/1892) and many others not mentioned always preached to the intellect. They never appealed to emotions, used marketing techniques, psychology, telling stories with tears flowing from their eyes, antidotes, using music, hymns or told them to say the "sinners prayer", which was an invention of Charles G. Finney (08/29/1792 - 08/16/1875). They preached the Gospel of Christ (we are justified "solely" i.e, "only" throught faith in Yeshua Ha-Mashiah--it is imputed righteousness) that included sin and repentance through the power of the Holy Spirit. One had to accept Christ as Lord and Savior. Yes, you had to be born again/born from above (John 3:3-7) to be a Real Christian and become a Child of God (John 1:12)-- see What Does it mean to be a Born Again Christian? and How can I become a Child of God?

John Calvin by HolbeinMartin Luther by Cranach

Portait of John Calvin (07/10/1509 - 05/27/1564) by Hans Holbein & Martin Luther (11/10/1483 - 02/18/1546) by Lucas Cranach. Also, see Libel Against Luther by Dr. Peter Hammond.

Did John Calvin & the Reformers believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit?

Concerning the lack of spiritual gifts in his day, John Calvin, known as the theologian of the Holy Spirit, said, "Today we see our own slender resources, our poverty in fact; but this is undoubtedly the punishment we deserve, as the reward for our ingratitude. For God's riches are not exhausted, nor has His liberality grown less; but we are not worthy of His largess, or capable of receiving all that he generously gives."1

See Spiritual Gifts Part Two by Rv. P.G. Matthew, who is orginally a scientist from India and holds three graduate degrees in theology from Central and Westminster theological seminaries (USA) and the article entitled Cessation and Speaking in Tongues by Dr. Vincent Cheung (who is Reformed). An excerpt from Dr. Cheung's article on Cessation and Speaking in Tongues,

Recently, I heard a sermon on the biblical approach to church growth by John MacArthur. He insisted that church growth methods that are based on business theories and marketing gimmicks are unfaithful and destructive. Rather, he proposed that Christians should return to the Acts of the Apostles, since in there the divine method modeled by the first disciples is set forth. He did not refer to some New Testament model in a general sense, but he was adamant that we must follow the Book of Acts.

Then, in the course of the sermon, he offered five principles that he had derived: The early church had 1) A transcendent message, 2) A regenerate congregation, 3) A valiant perseverance, 4) An evident purity, and 5) A qualified leadership. However, any honest expositor should have added, 6) A tongue-speaking, cripple-healing, dead-raising, demon-expelling, liar-slaying, prison-breaking, house-shaking, sorcerer-cursing, vision-seeing, future-predicting, miracle ministry. All these things are recorded in the Book of Acts, are they not?

Of course, I did not expect MacArthur to embarrass himself with the truth. Knowing that he was a raging cessationist, I waited for a mention of this item before it would be dismissed, but it never came. He did not even mention it. But I thought we were to return to the pattern in the Book of Acts? Which Book of Acts was he reading? Is this the champion of expository preaching that so many Christians adore? But I thought expository preaching was supposed to compel the preacher to address topics that he is uncomfortable with, and to set forth what he might find difficult to accept? What happened to that?

Unfortunately, you have ignorant people in both Arminian (especially stupid groups cursing Calvin & Luther) and Reformed Christians who do not understand Church history or what Calvin and Luther taught--I would suggest listening to the following audio lectures entitled A True Description of What Calvin Taught Again & Calvinism vs Arminianism (Audio) & The Baptism of the Holy Spirit (HTML) by Dr. Robert A. Morey. Also, see the "Apologetics Tab" to hear some of the above sermons. Three informative articles pertaining to the Holy Spirit and what Calvin taught:

Christians on both sides of the issues should be able to discuss their differences in a civil manner and go to the Bible as the final authority--many in the church do not know how to exegete the Scriptures and do not understand Greek and Hebrew and therefore will not debate a knowledgeable theologian on such issues. I wish Christians on both sides of the issue would witnesss and preach the Gospel, which many members in both Reformed and Arminian churches will not do. They will not stand up for anything either.

It should be noted that famous Arminian Evanglelists such as Ray Comfort & Kirt Cameron (Living Waters) evangelize the same way the Reformers did it (the Biblical way--sin and repentance) and are Arminian. They even did a joint venture with Dr. Peter Hammond in Africa (Frontline Fellowship), who is Reformed. They both have the same goals: Preach the Gospel of our Lord and Savior as commanded in the Bible to a lost world.

Top Reformed Theologian was in Italy in the 1990's when he Exercised the Gifts of Holy Spirit

Just because you have many so-called churches that are not exhibiting the real gifts of the Holy Spirit, but are counterfeit and teaching false doctrines, does not mean the real gifts are not manifesting themselves in the 21st century. For example, one of your top Reformed Theologians Dr. Robert A. Morey in the 21st century went to Italy with his wife (Dr. Anne Morey) in the 90's to visit a Brethren Church (that does not believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit). Dr. Morey did not understand Italian; however, God gave him the gift of tongues/languages and he could understand the sermon in his language (English)! The pastor and church members were stunned that he understood the whole sermon given by the pastor in Italian.

Presbyterian Missionary preaches the Gospel in the German language--he never spoke German.

The late Dr. C. John Miller, who taught Practical Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, told one of his classes (Dr. Robert A. Morey was there) that he was reading a diary about a Presbyterian missionary who arrived in Germantown, Philadelphia, PA in the 1700s and he wanted to preach the Gospel to the German immigrants there--however, they only spoke German and he had no knowledge of the German language; God gave him the gift of tongues/foreign languages (this case being the German language for one day) and he went forth by the power of the Holy Spirit and preached the Gospel in German! (The American Evangelists and preachers followed the English Puritans who followed the Reformers in how they preached the Gospel.)

What Happened to change the Way Evangelism is done?

The Greatest Reformation of the CenturyCharles G. Finney

Charles G. Finney (08/29/1792 - 08/16/1875) changed the method of Evangelism (Listen to Charles Finney: The Man, The Myth, The Message (How Biblical Evangelism in America was destroyed) by Dr. Bob Morey ). Finney decided to preach to people's feelings/emotions and revolted against the Puritans and Reformers way of evangelism (the Bible), which was to persuade people on why they ought to believe. The alter call was another invention of Finney as well. He also believed in "sinless perfection" and denied the vicarious atonement of Christ. Charles Finney denied original sin and was a Pelagian. (Pelagius--ca.354 - ca. 420/440--was an ascetic monk who denied the doctrine of original sin from Adam.) Yes, Finney was a heretic and was condemned by the Christian theologians of his day such as B.B. Warfield (11/05/1851 - 02/17/1921) . Most of Charles Finney's converts became either "Universalists" or "Unitarians". (See Charles Finney: The Man, The Myth, The Message (Audio) & How the Reformation Brought Freedom to Countries (Audio, Oct. 2007) by Dr. Robert A. Morey & article entitled How the Reformation Changed the World. Dr. Peter Hammond.)

Unfortunately, modern evangelists such as Billy Graham (1918 -- 02/21/18) adopted a lot of Finney's methods. [Billy Graham in his early years preached the Gospel with great clarity. Billy Graham appeared on May 31, 1997 on the Robert Schuller’s “Hour of Power” and stated that it is not necessary to hear of or believe in Jesus to go to heaven —see the video below for proof.

John MacArthur publicly rebuked Billy Graham on February 15, 2001 for saying this on the Robert Schuller’s show see John MacArthur’s written response on PDF; I will let God be the judge of Billy Graham’s heart, but what he stated is heretical.) Billy Graham removes Mormonism as a cult from his website and Has Been Compromised For Years; Dr. John MacArthur rebukes Billy Graham (see YouTub on this article)--10/18/12.

Dr. Martin Lloyd_Jones

Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (12/20/1889 to 03/01/1981)--the premiere evangelical preacher and theologian and medical doctor in London, Westminster Chapel--would not attend any of Billy Graham’s crusades. At the request of Billy Graham, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones had a two hour meeting with him. Billy Graham asked him why he would not attend his crusades. Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones response to Billy Graham was that the Bible gave him no authority to manipulate people, psychologically massage the audience and to emotionally overcome them to make all these false converts. Needless to say Billy Graham was upset and a close member of the Billy Graham family called Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones two days later and almost cursed him out. They told Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones that it took them several days to get Billy straightened out. This is why less than 1% of all the people who walked down the aisle after the alter call at his Crusades ever made it into a church--this has been admitted by the Billy Graham Association. The other people were signed, sealed and delivered into perdition over a false assurance. (See Billy Graham Exposed--YouTube by Dave Hunt.) It should be noted that so-called carnal Christians per Bible are not saved. Finney invented this third category of human beings called “carnal Christians.” The two Greek words, sarkikos and sarkos are different Greek words. According to Apostle Paul (Romans 8), if you are carnal, you are dead. There is either the “natural” or the “spiritual”—you are either “saved” or “lost”. The word “carnal” means dead, not saved!

Dr. Peter Hammond answers the question: As a Calvinist do you Preach the Gospel of Free Choice or The Gospel of Election?

What Does the Fear of God have to do with Witnessing and Evangelism?

Fearing God by Dr. Robert A. MoreyThe Brazen Serpent in the Ten Commandments

Moses lifts Brass Serpent to heal the Israelites from poisnous snake bites by Benjamin West

Apostle Paul was motivated to preach the Gospel because of the coming "terror" and judgment of Christ upon sinners. "knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men." (2 Corinthians 5:11, ISV)

The lack of the fear of God in the Evangelical Church is the main reason why Christians do not witness and is a form of antinomianism. "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that can't be shaken, we must be thankful and worship God in reverence and fear in a way that pleases him. For our God is an all-consuming fire. (Hebrews 12:28-29, ISV)

The Apostle of love in 1 John 2:19 called apostates "antichrists" and people who fell away because of heresy or immorality as never being saved. This is not saying that a Christian cannot fall into deep sin, but God will chastise a true "Child of God" (a person who is a born-again Christian--Hebrews 12:5-8).

Unless the Church fears God (see Matt. 10:28-29, Acts 9:31, 2 Cor. 7:1, 1 Peter 2:17 & Rev. 14:7) it will continue to be mindless (does not want to study Scripture), carnal, spinless, cowards and weak. There will be no revival but a severe judgment on the Church--see Ananias and Sapphira, who were slain in the spirit--that is, struck dead for lying to the Holy Spirit and great fear came upon the whole church (Acts. 2:43) and the church increased in numbers (Acts 2:47).

The whole counsel of God is no longer being taught (Acts 20:27). See book on Fearing God. and article entitled How Important is Fearing God?

Biblical Evangelism (Click to Listen to the Audio 10 Part Series) by Dr. Bob Morey & A Christian Student's Survival Guide (New Edition--10/21/16-- has color pictures in every chapter and has been expanded and the book's dimension has been reduced (7.44 x 9.69), 384 pages) ) .

First, "Instead, exalt Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you to explain the hope you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak evil of your good conduct in Christ will be ashamed of slandering you" (I Peter 3:15-16 ISV) . You better be a bona fide Christian and have no conflict with God--in other words, are you confessing (it means agreeing with God) and repenting of your sins and living a holy life (Prov. 28:13; I John 1:9)? This is does not imply "sinless perfection" (I John 1:8-10), which is impossible until we are resurrected (we will always sin until Christ returns) or living under the law (see Gal. 3:1-5). See I John 5:13 for information on our assurance for salvation. Do you have a clear conscience before God? Also, you should be filled with the Holy Spirit, "Be filled with the Holy Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18); in other words, we are commanded per Bible to be continuously filled with the spirit--this is what the grammatical tense of the Greek text teaches-- that the verse is in the present tense.

(See subtitle below Want to Learn how to Evangelize to Fellow Students? and other Resources, epecially the Tract entitled Will a One World Government/Religion Bring World Peace? for hard core Humanists on campus written by the President of NJIAT, to help you to effectively witness.)

Apologetics Tab & Cult Sites Tab & Biblical Evangelism (Click to Listen to the Audio 10 Part Series) by Dr. Bob Morey

Apologetics is part of evangelism and not a separate entity. Apologetics comes from the Greek word "apologia." It means a "verbal defense". It is used eight times in the New Testament: Acts 22:1; 25:16; 1 Cor. 9:3; 2 Cor. 10:5-6; Phil. 1:7; 2 Tim. 4:16, and 1 Pet. 3:15. You witness to people from where they are. There is no magical formula--the Holy Spirit has to do the convicting. There are two methods used in apologetics: Presuppositional (you deal with "first principles" or underlying ideas) and Evidential (logic, scientific facts, livability, etc). The two methods are not opposed to each other--I do not accept the false Greek dichotomy that it is either/or. They should be both used to bring people to Christ--see 1 Cor. 3:4-5, 21-23. (Beware of humanistic apologetics--there are "Evidentialists" who are rationalists, mystics and empiricists and there are "Presuppositionalists" who are mystics and fideists.)  Many of your current Christians apologists are humanists and have adopted "natural theology"--these humanist apologists would not have been allowed on the college circuit if Dr. Cornelius Van Til , Dr. Gordon H. Clark, Dr. Francis Schaeffer, etc. were still living. They all rejected "natural theology".

I have witnessed/evangelized to many people over the years, especially in the Princeton area, and they will not even listen to you if you do not answer their questions, which makes apologetics a must. Our country is a post-Christian society with maybe 5% or less born-again Christians in America (there was a recent Barna poll that had similar numbers).

Most of the people I witnessed to do not even understand what sin is--you have to explain what it is and go back to the book of Genesis .  If they are Atheists , Wiccans, Hinduism , Buddhism, Muslims , Judaism, Judaism Explained (Audio), etc., you better be able to refute their religion/worldview or they will not listen to you. (If they are nominal Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, Muslims, etc., you can use a soft approach--they are not hard core believers, which you will have to take a different approach.) Then you can present the Gospel,

that is, sin entered the world in the Garden of Eden (Adam and Eve, who were created perfect and had no sin, disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit (rebellion; Genesis 2 & 3 )--Eve was deceived by Satan);as a result, all of humanity has been "imputed" with Adam's sin and thus guilty before a holy righteous God. Man lost the ability to obey God perfectly (His law). Only by the Messiah's blood sacrifice on the cross can man be reconcilied to God. One must repent (turn from our ways) and accept the Messiah. We are justified "solely" (i.e. "only") through faith in Yeshua Ha-Mashiah--it is "imputed" righteousness. You cannot earn salvation. Your so-called good works are like filthy rages before a Holy Righteous God (Isa. 64:6).

A person has to accept Christ as Lord and Savior to be saved and He is the only way of salvation-- “nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12 NKJV).

NJIAT highly recommendes going out with experienced Evangelists for Street preaching.

Recommended for carrying Tracts, small books, electronic devices, etc. while witnessing on the Streets: Bob Allen Superior Belt/Pouch (it attaches to your waist like a fanny pack).

Two-Question Heaven Test is very Effective in Opening the Door to the Gospel

Heaven Test: Are you going to Heaven? Free Test

Here is a helpful link for further information on presenting the Gospel and how it relates to the Two-Question Heaven Test below when witnessing: How Will I do on Judgment Day? Also, see the Apologetics Tab and Cult Tab on this website to know how to defend the faith.

Any witnessing should done by the power of the Holy Spirit--it should not be scripted. If you use the Two-Question Heaven Test sign on the Street, "If you were going to die today, would you go to Heaven?, it opens the door for having conversations with the people and presenting the Gopsel in addition to handing out tracts (see why Tracts are important? and also see the subtitle Recommended Bible Tracts below to find out where to get the Heaven Test sign.) You study the Bible and Apologetics to be prepared to give an intelligent answer and defend the faith.

A quote from I Peter & Jude 3:

"Insted, exalt Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you to explain the hope you have."  (I Peter 3:14, ISV)

"Dear friends, although I was eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I found it necessary to write to you and urge you to continue your vigorous defense of the faith that was passed down to the saints once and for all" (Jude 3, ISV)

Also, many Hindus, Jewish or Muslims will not take a regular Gospel tract such as a Ray Comfort tract--you should have a Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist tract, etc. to give to them. ( It also depends on if the person you are witnessing to is a fundamentalist/orthodox Hindu, Muslim, etc., then you better be prepared for some tough questions--see Q & A part 6 of video lecture series to an Evangelical Chinese audience at DeSales University in 2011 located at DeSales University--part 6.

Recommended ministries for College, University & High School students in NJ, PA or NY to contact who want learn how to Evangelize and defend the faith on campuses or how to witness on the Streets—students can get real training by actually going out with either NJIAT or Street Light Ministries or CHANGE Collegiate Network to such places as Princeton, Rutgers University, University of Pennsylvania, New York City, etc.  NJIAT can also be contacted via e-mail (see Contact Tab on bottom) and we will direct you to the appropriate people for Evangelism.  It is unfortunate that so many students are ashamed of the Gospel of Christ and will not actively witness on camp—this is in direct violation of Scripture (Matt. 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; 8:1-4 & 1 Thess. 1:7-10—see the Witnessing Tab).

There have been only two dedicated Princeton University students, one who graduated in 2010 (from California) and the other in 2007 (from Texas) who would openly evangelize to their fellow classmates and evangelize on the streets on a consistent basis. However, the first Princeton University student to go out street witnessing was a student who was an athlete of Swedish origin in 2003 and was a member of Athletes in Action (AIA) at Princeton University.

The NJIAT President met the Princeton University student from Texas at a Princeton University lecture given by Maggie Gallagher from the Institute for Marriage and Public Policy on why people should support marriage between a man and a wife--the NJIAT President raised his hand to ask Maggie the following question: "How can you defend marriage between a man and woman unless you appeal to the Bible"? She was upset with the NJIAT president's question because she was trying to prove marriage from nature (Natural Law) and tried to show how most societies accept marriage and people are happier--she had no authority for marriage (a creation ordinance in Genesis) because she did not appeal to the Scriptures--this is a major difference between Protestantism and Roman Catholicism --the Protestants believe in Sola Scriptura as the ultimate authority, not sola ratione. (The Princeton University Texas student, who became a born-again Christian while in college, shook the NJIAT president's hand after the lecture and said it took courage to defend the Bible.)

A Princeton University campus leader came out to witness with one of the students (2010 graduate from CA) and liked it; however, he was told by his superiors he could no longer join the Christian student in Evangelizing at Princeton University.  What a disgrace!

What is a true Missionary? Are short-term “missions” simply all expense paid vacations to exotic locations so people can feel good about themselves?

A statute of David Livingstone (1813-1873), who was a missionary to Africa, on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls. Map on right (journeys of Livingstone in Africa between 1851 and 1873).

A quote from Dr. Brian Abshire from his article entitled MISSIONARY MADNESS

Turning Sacred Cows into Holy Hamburgers

However, please don’t call yourself a “missionary” if you don’t do “missionary” work. Missionaries preach the Gospel, start churches, disciple leaders and open new territories for Christ. Thus if you are an accountant, school teacher or cook working for a mission’s organization, you are NOT a missionary. You are an accountant, teacher or cook working maybe in a foreign land. And while accountants, book-keepers, cooks and janitors all have important work to do, they are NOT “missionaries.” Misusing this term commits the fallacy of “equivocation” wherein you subtly shift between the meanings of words using the connotations of one meaning to justify the connotations of another.

What about so-called Mission Trips by the Youth?

Christians including teenagers in youth groups at Evangelical Churches that go on so-called short "mission" trips do not share their faith with friends (look at some of the pathetic Christian clubs at our High Schools & Colleges), do not witness (especially Street witnessing), do not know how to give a testimony, cannot explain what the Gospel is, do not know what a Biblical Worldview is, do not fear God, will not take a stand for marriage or righteousness at their high school, think there is nothing wrong with homosexuality or the legalizing of gay marriage, think there is nothing wrong with fornicating, and cannot defend the faith--see Ten Campus Curses (PDF). But they are going to do "mission" work in a foreign country and reach people for Christ? What a joke. Many of the youth in Evangelical Churches and older members are professsing Christians, but not born again Christians!

If the parents or the church want to send their teenagers on a foreign trip, then do not spiritualize it. Do not call it missions, but a retreat or vacation to maybe help them grow or know who the Lord is. If your teenagers will not witness at school or take stand for Christ, tell them to stay home. Some of the youth that go on so-called mission trips admit they are not Christians! They like doing good deeds.

Note: Unfortunately, today we have many parents that no longer has a Christian impulse nor feels the need to subscribe to biblical ethics, standards, and values and teach the Lordship of Christ to their children---parents feel the need to pass on some kind of spirituality to their children by sending them off to Sunday school. In fact, many parents are lackadaisical to the whole issue of a spiritual heritage for their children, declaring that the kids “can decide for themselves if they want to believe in God or choose a religion when they are older". Also, parents are putting their children before God and this is why they will not take a stand for God on such issues as homosexuality--see YouTube by a black pastor in Harlem, NYC entitled Homosexuality: A Family Affair--parents putting their children before God (08/26/13) & A Critique of Modern Youth Ministries by Christopher Schlect (see FAQ Tab, Question#16).

Clarification: Cultural things are lawful and the issue is not whether you have long hair or short hair; this is not an issue of truth or morals. For example, if you are witnessing in a particular culture where long hair for men is an offense or women not wearing a dress is an offense, then Christians are free to conform to that culture to win them for Christ (I Cor. 10:29). The length of hair is a relative and a cultural issue. This is not an issue of “absolute morality”, which would be sin in any culture such as homosexuality, fornication, adultery, etc.

What is the difference between Judicial forgiveness and Parental Forgiveness? Should true Christians still confess to God even though they are saved and written in the Book of Life? Is this important for Evangelism?

Heard of the Lord's Prayer? Forgive us our sins (Matthew 6:8-13). You have heretics, who do not know the Greek, going around telling Christians they do not have to ask for forgiveness and stating that the Greek phrase in Matthew 6, verse 12 meant we are forgiven--when you parse the Greek word in verse 12, it does not mean this. Unfortunately, you have misguided Christians mixing up justification (past, present and future sins are forgiven--positional forgiveness) with sanctification (relational forgiveness) and stating that Christians do not have to confess their sins or repent.

In The Book of Revelation and the letters to the churches, every church except the Philadelphia Church gets a warning to repent if guilty of that sin (see Revelation 2 & 3). Do you remember King David? A man after God's own heart--when King David was confronted by Nathan the prophet about his murder of Uriah and adultery with Bathsheba (See 2 Samuel 11:14), he confessed his sins to God (see Psalm 51 & 2 Samuel 12:13). King David possessed the same Holy Spirit that New Testament Christians have and was justified the same way as the New Testament saints--that is, justifiied "solely" (i.e. "only") through faith in Yeshua Ha-Mashiah (it was his faith of the Christ/Messiah to come--the 2nd person of the Trinity--and King David could not loose his salvation). And Christ Himself says: "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad." (John 8:56 NKJV) (See Acts 15:10, 11, I Corinthians 10:4, Hebrews 11 and Martin Luther's Commentary on Galatians--ISBN#0-8007-1702-3 and chart on Judicial Forgiveness vs.Parental Forgiveness in the book entitled Studies in The Atonement by Dr. Robert A. Morey, page 183 and Do Christians have to keep asking for Forgiveness?) Also, Christians can resist the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51). If you are convicted of sin from the Holy Spirit (3rd person of the Trinity) and do not repent--that is resisting the Holy Spirit (John 16:8).

Yes, God is Sovereign (God has predetermined the elect and is in total control) and man is Accountable--our finite minds will not be able to reconcile the two statements that are both true. True Christians will face the judgment seat (I Corinthians 3:10-23, 2 Corinthians 5:10)--it is called judgement of the saved or BEMA judgement where you get your rewards and are judged on what you did as Christians on this earth (this is not condemnation, which is the judgement of the lost; see Rev. 20:11-15).

What about appealing to the Conscience in Evangelism? Is this Biblical?

The Bible, Natural Theology and Natural Law: Conflict or Chance? by Dr. Robert A. Morey

An excerpt from Chapter 11, pages 331-333 from the book entitled The Bible, Natural Law, and Natural Theology: Conflict or Compromise? by Dr. Robert A. Morey:

The Biblical Concept of the Conscience

The word English word “conscience” carries a great deal of cultural and philosophical baggage that has been collected down through the centuries. Natural Law theorists naively assume that the word refers to the Stoic idea of an infallible divine faculty resident in “human nature.” They do not define or defend their assumption. They simply assume that is what the word means.

The biblical concept of the “conscience” has nothing to do with Stoicism. The Hebrew Old Testament never refers to the “conscience.” There isn’t even a Hebrew word for it. No one in the Torah ever appealed to it as an inner judge of right and wrong. Since the Jews had the Torah, they did not need a conscience.

In the New Testament, the word never appears in the Gospels and is never referred to by Jesus or the Twelve. In the Epistles, the Greek word simply means “joint”, “knowledge” ( ) and has no ontological reality. It simply meant to be sincere in what you say and do. This is why it is used as the opposite to lying in Rom. 9:1.

I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my
conscience bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit,

Barclay and Nida point out that the word,

Conscience may be variously translated, depending
upon the particular set of associations connected with
certain terms or phrases—for example, “my heart,”
“my innermost,” “that which speaks within me,” or
“the voice in my heart.”

In Acts 23:1 Paul said,

And Paul, looking intently at the Council, said,
"Brethren, I have lived my life with a perfectly good
conscience before God up to this day."

Newman and Nida analyze the word (“conscience”) in this text to mean “in my heart I have no serious questions about my whole life before God.” Vincent’s Word Studies in the New Testament defined in the following way.

In scripture we are to view conscience, as Bishop Ellicott remarks, not in its abstract nature, but in its practical manifestations. Hence it may be weak (1 Cor. 8:7, 12), unauthoritative, and awakening only the feeblest emotion. It may be evil or defiled (Heb. 10:22; Tit. 1:15), through consciousness of evil practice. It may be seared (1 Tim. 4:2), branded by its own testimony to evil practice, hardened and insensible to the appeal of good. On the other hand, it may be pure (2 Tim. 1:3), unveiled, and giving honest and clear moral testimony. It may be void of offence (Acts 24:16), unconscious of evil intent or act: good, as here, or honorable (Heb. 13:18). The expression and the idea, in the full Christian sense, are foreign to the Old Testament, where the testimony to the character of moral action and character is borne by external revelation rather than by the inward moral consciousness.

As Walvoord and Zuck point out, the post-lapsarian conscience of man,

is not an absolutely trustworthy indicator of what is right. One’s conscience can be “good” (Acts 23:1; 1 Tim. 1:5, 19) and “clear” (Acts 24:16; 1 Tim. 3:9; 2 Tim. 1:3; Heb. 13:18), but it can also be “guilty” (Heb. 10:22), “corrupted” (Titus 1:15), “weak” (1 Cor. 8:7, 10, 12), and “seared” (1 Tim. 4:2). All people need to trust the Lord Jesus Christ so that “the blood of Christ” might “cleanse [their] consciences” (Heb. 9:14).

When Natural theologians interpret the word as a reference to the pagan Greek concept of a divine faculty resident in “human nature,” they are guilty of reading pagan ideas back into Scripture. Scripture should be interpreted while standing on Mt. Zion, not Mt. Olympus.

1 The KJV translates the Hebrew word (heart) is mistranslated “conscience” in a few places. When one Natural theologian demanded that be interpreted to mean the “conscience,” I pointed him to Pro. 28:26, which says that whoever trusts in his is a fool. If he wants to refer to the conscience, then Scripture forbids us to trust the conscience!

In other words, the conscience is unreliable to determine what right or wrong is—this is why the law (special revelation) is preached to show people they are guilty before God and need to repent of their sins. The conscience cannot be used to establish universal laws. Otherwise Apostle Paul would not have stated that he would not have known what sin is if the law was not revealed to him.

What should we say, then? Is the law sinful? Of course not! In fact, I wouldn’t have known sin if it had not been for the law. For I wouldn’t have known what it means to covet if the law had not said, “You must not covet.” (Romans 7:7, ISV)

It should also be noted that the “law is not written in the hearts” of the unconverted. Romans 2:15 (NKJV) states, “who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them.” It is the work of law, not the law written in their hearts! Only when a person becomes converted/regenerated that the law is written in their hearts (see Hebrews 8:7-13).

Man’s condemnation comes from the inherited depravity from Adam (Rom. 5:12-21). Thus the presence or absence of Torah does not determine the condemnation of sinners. We are “born in sin and conceived iniquity” (Psa. 51:5); we are “already perishing” () from the moment we are conceived (1Cor. 1:18); we are “dead in trespasses and sins” (Eph. 2-1-2). Yes, we are guilty from birth because of Adam and Eve’s imputation of sin. Apostle Paul never tells us that Creation can lead us to salvation. Creation is sufficient to condemn us, but not sufficient to save us. The Gentiles have the light of Creation but suppress () the witness of Creation and worship the Creation instead of the Creator (Romans 1:25) because they cannot do otherwise unless God reveals Himself through Special Revelation and grants them repentance and faith. General Revelation is not Natural Law, but God’s activity of revealing Himself (Romans 1:19). However, man’s depravity does not allow God’s revelation to get through. Apostle Paul states that we all,

suppress the truth in unrighteousness

(Rom. 1:18)

What about the use of Humor, Ridicule and Mocking of False Religions in the Bible?

Elijah killing Baal prophets by Gustave Dore 1865Kingdoms of Israel and Judah in the 9th century BC

Picture of Elijah the prophet (9th century BC--approx. 869 BC) killing the prophets of Baal (I Kings 18:38-40) by Gustave Dore (1865). After Elijah mocked the prophets of Baal and fire came down from heaven and devoured the sacrifice, Elijah then killed the false prophets (see I Kings 18:20-40).

And God Mocked Them (Click to hear Audio by Dr. Robert A. Morey) & Also, see the free video presentation The Names of God by Dr. Robert A. Morey (The Names of God presentation describes what the correct translation is for "Jesus", "Christ", "Joshua", etc. Too many ignorant Christians. Christians have whitewashed many of the Greek and Hebrew words because of political correctness. For example, Hebrews 5 actually says in the one verse (a paraphrase) "there are many things I would like to explain, but you are imbeciles." The correct translation.)

Do not allow the world to mold you (Rom. 12:1), this has caused many Christians to adopt the heresy of "political correctness". There are times when God will lead Christians through the Holy Spirit to use humor, ridicule, and mock false religions. This was practiced by Christ (Matt. 23), the Prophets (I Kings 18:26), Apostles (2 Peter 3, Gal. 5:12), Reformers [Martin Luther (11/10/1483 - 02/18/1546) called the false divinity teachers "senseless asses"], etc. Here a few Bible quotes on divine humor & ridicule:

  • "The wicked plots against the righteous, and grinds his teeth at him. But the Lord laughs at him because he sees that his day is coming!" (Psalm 12-13 ISV).
  • "Everyone is stupid and senseless. They follow worthless instruction from a piece of wood!" (Jeremiah 10:8 ISV).
  • "John would say to the crowds that were coming out to be baptized by him, 'You children of serpents! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?'" (Luke 3:7 ISV).
  • "The righteous will fear when they see this, but then they will laugh at him, saying 'Look, here is a young man who refused to make God his strength; instead, he trusted in his great wealth and made his wickedness his strength.'" (Psalm 52:6-7 ISV).
  • "But Elymas the occult practioner (that is the meaning of his name) continued to oppose them and tried to turn the proconsul away from the faith. But Saul, also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked him straight in the eye and said, `You are full of every form of deception and trickery, you son of the devil, you enemy of all that is right! You will never stop perverting the straight ways of the Lord, will you?’" (Acts 13:8-10, ISV).
  • “Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men oppose the truth. They are depraved in mind and their faith is a counterfeit. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those two men, their stupidity will be plain to everyone." (II Timothy 3:8-9, ISV).
  • “And so it was, at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, `Cry aloud, for he is a god; either he is meditating, or he is busy, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened.’” (I Kings 18:27, NKJV).
  • “Listen to this message, you fat cows from Bashan, who live on the Samaritan mountains, who oppress the poor, who rob the needy, and who constantly as your husbands for none more drink!” (Amos 4:1, ISV).
  • "Because the shepherds are stupid and don't seek the Lord, therefore, they don't prosper, and their flock is scattered." (Jeremiah 10:21, ISV).
  • "Everyone is stupid and without knowledge. Every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols, for his images are false. There is no life in them." (Jeremiah 10:14).

Of course, this is not a license to go around insulting people and acting obnoxious--there is a time and place for everything and one must be led by the Holy Spirit. (For further information, see And God Mocked Them: The Divine Use of Humor And Ridicule in the Bible--CD by Dr. Robert A. Morey.) Also, see What the Bleep does the Bible say about Profanity?

Warning: Christian College clubs should not be sponsoring Jesuit-trained apologists (who call themselves Evangelicals) or evangelists and students should not be using their material for defending the faith. This has occurred at the College of New Jersey (TCNJ) on March 31, 2009 with the debate between Frank Turek [a nice guy, but brain washed by the Thomists (who adhere to the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas--the official philosopher of the Roman Catholic Church--who got his philosophy from Aristotle) and Christopher Hitchens. [Thomas Aquinas (1225-74) was a heretic—he denied justification by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, apart from works; justification is that act of God in which the imputed righteousness of Christ is credited to your account--he believed in infused righteousness, which is a works based salvation in addition to other heresies (see what Aquinas wrote in his Summa Theologica, ii, 1, question 100, article 12)]. You basically had two humanists arguing with each other, but Christopher Hitchens was smart enough to know that Paley and Rationalism (David Hume refuted Rationalism and the mechanistic worldview) had been discredited a long time ago. Dr. Francis Schaeffer stated, “A Christian humanist is a humanist.” Why are Jesuit trained apologists on the college circuit? Dr. Norman Geisler was the first to openly break with the historic evangelical position on Aquinas. In his small book defending Thomas Aquinas, he stated that since the previous generation of Protestant apologists, such as Carl Henry, Francis Schaeffer, Van Til, etc. were now dead, the time was now ripe for him and other secret Thomists to come “out of the closet.” These Jesuit-trained Thomists would have had their sorry asses kicked out of the evangelical circuit by the great Evangelical scholars, if they were alive, such as Dr. Van Til, Dr. Gordon Clark, Dr.Carl F. Henry, Dr. Francis Schaeffer, etc. They all rejected Aquinas’ Natural Theology and Natural Law. They understood that the doctrine of sola scriptura was the basis of the Reformation—that is, sola scriptura.
